Back in the day, the Isle of Capri had two river-boats with the entire third floor of one boat devoted to poker. It was the place to play with a large number of tables, all of which were full on Friday and Saturday nights –the action was fantastic. Since then two new casinos came to town, first L’Auberge and then The Golden Nugget. L’Auberge and The Golden Nugget stole much of the thunder and poker players from the Isle. The Isle was reduced to one boat and a poker “room” of 8 or so tables that wasn’t physically separate from the regular gaming floor or the subsequent smoke.
As of yesterday, however, the Isle of Capri has officially opened a new and improved poker room under the management of David Stewart who has come back to the Isle to revive the poker room. With cooperation from the corporate big wigs, David was allowed to build a new poker room from scratch as he saw fit and I believe that David’s vision is putting the Isle back on the poker map. First, David physically relocated the poker room. The room still resides on the bottom deck but now it is located behind the escalators. Moreover, there is a smoke free section of slots from the escalators back to the poker room. That means that the smoke free poker room is not just smoke free but free of second hand smoke from slots players. And the staff is right on any patrons that violate the smoking restrictions. You can breath easy in the new poker room.

A self-serve beverage center is but five paces outside of the poker room for the teetotalers.
The new tables come equipped with charging stations for phones and what not and best of all, free Wi-FI has been installed! The dealers are experienced and professional. The management and staff are knowledgeable and courteous as well. Comps could be a bit better. Players currently earn $1/hr of play in comps. There is no ordering of food from the table, but a quick run upstairs and good food can be purchased and brought back to be eaten table side.
There is a Bad Beat Jackpot that requires quad fives to be beaten (and other minutia) to qualify. Other promotions such as high hand of the hour, aces cracked, and others are available at various times. And the Isle seems to really be pushing to bring back tournament players, offering more tournaments.
Regarding the action. 4/8 limit and 1/3 no limit are the most popular cash games. A bigger 2/5 no limit game might make on the weekends. The nice thing about playing at the Isle is that the games play at their respective sizes. The 1/3 no limit games at the Isle’s competitors play big with typical stacks ranging from $500 to $2000, with an average somewhere around $1000. At a typical 1/3 game at the Isle, stacks average between $300 and $500. In other words, if you would like to play sane poker, you owe it to yourself to try out the new and improved Isle of Capri. If, however, you wish crazy action and deep pockets going after each other, L’Auberge and The Golden Nugget are probably a better bet when in the Lake Charles area.
One previous reviewer noted collusion between players as a reason to avoid the Isle. There are some seasoned players that haunt the Isle, but they play straight up poker. I believe that the players that the previous reviewer encountered have moved to greener pastures with bigger bankrolls to attack.
Make it a plan to try out the new and improved Isle of Capri when in the Lake Charles area. Win or lose, you might find yourself passing a good time. And serious grinders can make a bit of money there without having to put too much money on the table to stay competitive. Most of the players there are playing for the fun of it rather than making a living at it. Hence, the level of competition is not too rough in the cash games. As far as the tournaments go, I haven’t a clue since I suffer from cash game fever.
